...Maria Luz Palma April 21st, 2015 Mannion period 7 DBQ The Crusades took place in the Middle East between 1095 and 1291. They were used to gain a leg up on trading, have more land to show hegemony, and to please the gods. Based upon the documents, the Crusades between 1095 and 1291 were caused primarily by religious devotion rather than by the desire for economic and political gain. They were different wars which afterward lead to cultural diffusion and urbanization. The documents could be compared and grouped by the causes and effects which were religion, glory, land and wealth. During the crusades political leaders and writers used religion as a way to persuade people to join the fight. Their ways of persuasion were to fight against Gods' enemies, who were the Turks, Franks, and Arabs. People who invaded other Christian and Islamic lands to conquer them, killing many of their people in the process. Documents one, two, four, and five show the way the political leaders and writers had put the image of the attackers into their people's minds. Leaders such as Pope Urban II, Ekkehard, Saladin and Solomon described the attackers in ill manners. Ms. Murphy AP European History 7 4 September 2013 Religion behind the European Crusades During the High Middle Ages, many people seek for a more personal and deeper spiritual experience in Christianity to guide their daily lives in European society by following the highly valued sacraments and the Catholic Church’s teachings in order to receive salvation from God. However, beginning in the twelfth century, many other types of people became defiant and created heresy, or other religious beliefs besides Christianity, that challenged the Catholic Church and Christianity. Since heresy was seen as a sin against God and human society, the Church reacted by starting the Crusades, military campaigns that encouraged faithful believers to defend Christianity against “unbelievers” during the 1200’s. As more different kinds of races attacked, fear and fanaticism increased throughout Europe and many, including the papacy, called for action to get rid of them. Therefore, from the 12 th-13 th centuries, the Crusades were driven primarily by religious devotion more than political and economic gain as a result of “infidels” attacking Christianity, the desire to spread Christian influence overseas, and persecution of other races such as Jews throughout the East. The Crusades officially happened as a result of Muslims attacking the Holy Lands in the East, especially the Holy City of Jerusalem. They were the nomadic Seljuk Turks who came from Central Asia and became mercenaries to the Abbasid caliphate in Baghdad. Eventually, they converted to Islam and conquered the Abbasid Empire in 1055, threatening the nearby Byzantine Empire by trying to move into Asia Minor and Anatolia and take control.
